Functional Vision Evaluations and Annual Reassessments for all ages

Functional Vision Evaluation is an extensive evaluation if the visual system, how it develops, and how it impacts an individual’s daily life. The need for this type of evaluation is determined during the initial patient consultation which is held online and takes between 1.5 to 2 hours. The evaluation itself takes upward of 3 hours. Results and recommendations are reviewed with the patient and family in a second online consultation. These include Visual Development and the Neurodevelopmental reflexes; Ocular health; Eyesite: Eye teaming: Focusing ability; Eye movements; Visual neurological integrity; Visual information processing; Visual perception; Visual motor integration; Visual scholastic ability; and Postural Adaptations to visual precepts.

Syntonics Phototherapy Evaluations

The elements of the Syntonic Evaluation are integral parts of the Functional Vision Evaluation. We have listed it separately for those individuals who undergo a comprehensive eye examination and are recommended additional testing. Briefly syntonics is the use of the visible light spectrum as a form of treatment or as an adjunct to other treatments of the disorders of the visual system, the foundational causes of visual disorders, and the symptoms experienced by the patients in their everyday lives.

Visual Field and Functional Field Analysis

Visual field analysis and functional field analysis are quite different. The visual field analysis looks at the integrity of the optic nerve the optic track as it goes towards the occipital cortex in the brain. Damage to the visual field can occur from a variety of disorders. In the functional field analysis, we are looking for a patient's ability not to detect object or movement but certain characteristics of a target as it is brought in from the periphery. This ability declines not with physical damage to the eye or brain but instead stems from barriers of a functional nature. The visual field analysis is a part of the comprehensive eye examination. Both these analyses are included in the functional vision evaluation.

Infant Examinations

Which is better one or goo?

There are two distinct types of infant evaluations. The first is a well-baby visit where the parents would like to have a baseline evaluation of their child's visual system, always a wonderful, recommended move. The second type of infant evaluation is when there is something suspected to be amiss in the development or health of an infant’s eyes. Both types rely on an extensive history including prenatal birth history and any pertinent medical history. While similar in expectations to an adult evaluation they are nothing like the adult comprehensive evaluation. Not too many infants will answer the question which is better one or two.

Strabismus and Amblyopia Evaluations

Do you have one eye that is lazy? Do you have an eye that turns in towards your nose or out towards one of your ears? Then you may have strabismus or amblyopia or both! The evaluation for strabismus and amblyopia is the functional evaluation. If an individual has already been diagnosed by a Doctor of Optometry or ophthalmology and they've already had their refraction and ocular health evaluated they will still need to go through the Functional Vision Evaluation. There are over 53 different elements within the functional vision evaluation that are not commonly found in other ocular evaluations.

Visual Evaluations for Specialty Populations (Autism, Down, Prader-Willi, Learning Dysfunction)

If your child or family member is of the special needs population a routine eye examination is not always routine. The likelihood of visual ocular or functional defects is much higher. Modifications in the evaluation and the testing strategies are required. While the tests performed may not be a functional vision evaluation and may be only a baseline comprehensive examination the time that this evaluation takes is often greater. A thorough initial consultation online to better understand the individual their abilities their needs and their history is necessary before determining the length and fee for their comprehensive examination.

Children's Eye Exam

Pediatric Annual Eye Evaluation

Children are not little adults. Their examination should not be treated as a mini adult visual evaluation. I don't know too many adults who touch everything in the room. Nor do I know too many adults who kick scream cry when drops are put in their eyes. Well, maybe a few. Therefore to think that you're going to bring your child in for a regular examination and be in and out in 20 minutes - not going to happen. Even if there is nothing wrong and you are looking for a baseline exam please be aware that children don't always behave the way we expect them to. The examinations may take more time we may have to split it up between days. Having said that we love having children come into the office and discover the joys of seeing well!

Contact Lenses

Contact Lens Design and Fitting

Who doesn't love the option of running around without glasses on their face? Contact lenses allow us the freedom to be able to see and perform tasks without the limitation or irritation of glasses. Not all eyes are made the same and therefore, fitting those eyes into the appropriate contact lenses is an evaluation in and of itself. A comprehensive eye examination with refraction and dilation is required to be performed before contact lenses will be fit. The type of lens that would be best suited for each individual is discussed during the evaluation, lenses or trial lenses are ordered, a patient will need to return to the office several times to ensure appropriate fit and comfort. The greater the complexity of the type of consequence the more visits will be required. Be patient with this process don't rush it so that we can get it right and you will have that option to run around without glasses on your face.

Refraction Services

What can you see, how far away can you see it, how clearly can you see it - these are all questions that are answered during the refraction. Fun fact your refractive status changes throughout the day. It changes with the demands of the tasks that you are performing. Putting lenses in front of a person's eyes to allow them to see the world in a manner that suits one task does not always make things better for all tasks. Therefore, how well you see in the distance and then a pair of glasses to fix it is not what we're looking to do here. The refraction evaluation that is performed is known as a 21-point refraction. There are more than 21 tests that look at eyesight, ocular alignment, and focusing.
